Exclusive – No complaints over Chelsea axe for Liverpool clash, insists Cahill

first_imgGary Cahill insists he has no issue with Jose Mourinho’s decision to leave him out of Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool on Tuesday night. The centre-back was dropped for the crunch League Cup semi-final second leg tie at Stamford Bridge, with Mourinho instead opting to play youngster Kurt Zouma alongside John Terry at the heart of the home side’s defence.Cahill admits news of his axe, delivered at a team meeting on the morning of the game, left him gutted, but the 29-year-old concedes he can have no cause for complaint after the Blues won 1-0 to book their place at Wembley.Speaking to Drivetime, the England international said: “I don’t need to tell you how disappointed I was I wasn’t playing but the bigger picture is the team and how well we have done to get to the final in what was a difficult tie over two legs. It’s a great achievement and another chance to win some silverware with Chelsea.”Cahill was not given any warning he would be benched before Mourinho informed the squad of his starting XI to face Liverpool, but that did not disappoint the former Bolton man.“His door is always open. If you need to go and speak to him about anything, you can go and speak to him,” he said.“I don’t think he feels he needs to explain every decision, but he is approachable. His door is open and you can go and see him. He changes the team up as and when he feels and he has done that this season.“It’s a squad game. Throughout the whole of the season it is impossible to play every single game and the bigger picture is how well the team has done. I thought they were fantastic last night, it was a great game to watch, and the outcome was exactly how we wanted it. It was a great night.”last_img
